Island House
Understated luxury meets local community hub. The aesthetic is calm and residential — neutral tones, natural materials, art on the walls — rather than a splashy resort. Think private club energy with genuinely warm staff. Sports-minded and wellness-heavy without being preachy about it.
Book Shima for dinner — the Southeast Asian food is genuinely excellent and portions are generous enough to share. Weekend brunch at Shima is a local institution.
Why It Matters
The only Bamford Spa in the Bahamas. The only luxury boutique hotel on New Providence set on a hilltop estate. A genuine gathering space for Nassau locals — celebrities, artists, and residents use the cinema, restaurants, and fitness facilities — which gives guests a window into actual Bahamian life that the Cable Beach corridor cannot offer. Also connected to Highbourne Cay, a privately owned island in the Exumas that is part of the TIH family.
The Island House is a 30-room boutique hotel on 8 acres of hilltop gardens in western Nassau — far from the cable-car crowds of Paradise Island and the mega-resorts on the east side of New Providence. It opened in April 2015 with an explicit double mandate: serve discerning travelers and become a genuine community hub for locals. The result is a property with a thoughtful cultural identity: an art-house cinema, a TERN art gallery, a Bamford Spa (the only one in the Bahamas), squash and padel courts, three restaurants, a reformer Pilates studio, and a sauna and cold plunge, all tied together with an understated design that leans on coral stone, Pecky-cypress ceilings, and commissioned lighting sculptures.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A 48-seat cinema designed to attract both hotel guests and the local Nassau arts community. Shows recent releases daily as well as classic films. Has its own bar — book a sofa seat for the most comfortable viewing. Also hosts live music, seminars, and speaking events.
The famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay are about 80 miles from Nassau. The hotel arranges day trips — typically by powerboat or small plane. Also a jumping-off point for snorkeling with stingrays via Power Boat Adventures.
Highbourne Cay is a privately owned island 35 miles southeast in the Exumas — part of The Island House family. It has eight beaches within walking distance of a first-class marina and offers luxury cottages. Overnight stays available; the hotel can arrange access.
A daily schedule of fitness classes — yoga, boot camps, anti-gravity yoga, ballet barre — open to hotel guests at no charge. Classes are also open to local members. Current schedule available on the hotel website.
A boutique Pilates studio specializing in private and small group reformer sessions led by Kathryn Stoneman. Open to hotel guests, members, and non-members. Book via wellness@the-island-house.com or call the hotel.
Padel tennis courts on-site. A growing sport in the Bahamas — the hotel has been ahead of the curve.
Two squash courts that draw sporty Nassau locals as well as hotel guests — among the only quality squash facilities on the island.
A Bahamas National Trust protected old-growth forest just around the corner from the hotel. Dramatic sinkholes up to 50 feet deep, sub-fossil Bahamian fauna, and Lucayan artifacts. An easy and unusual half-day outing.
A dedicated sandy stretch reserved for hotel guests only, a 5-minute shuttle ride from the property. Beach bar on-site and lunch can be delivered from the hotel's restaurants. Complimentary shuttle runs on-demand.
Less than 10 minutes from the hotel, Stuart Cove's runs world-class dive and snorkel operations off the southwest coast of New Providence. The famous shark dive is the headline act. Hotel can arrange bookings. Ages 4 and up for snorkeling.
An on-site art gallery showcasing rotating exhibitions from local Bahamian artists. Public spaces throughout the hotel also feature commissioned artwork and sculptural lighting pieces.
