Why It Matters
Featured in the 2022 Condé Nast Traveler Hot List. The building was once the home of Rádio Renascença and is one of Lisbon's most ornate 19th-century structures. The multi-space Rocco dining concept — Italian ristorante, Crudo Bar, and cocktail-forward Gastro Bar — draws as many locals as guests. Two signature top-floor suites with Tagus river views and private terraces are among the best rooms in the city.
The Ivens is a playfully stylish, understatedly luxe boutique hotel in a pink-hued 19th-century building in Chiado — Lisbon's most coveted neighborhood. The whole place is themed around Portuguese explorers Roberto Ivens and Hermenegildo Capelo, who famously got lost in the jungle for 42 days, and the designers ran hard with it: tropical plants, velvet chesterfields, frescoes of African jungle scenes, and staff in safari-suited uniforms. But it doesn't tip into kitsch. Lázaro Rosa-Violán and Cristina Matos kept the rooms calm — beige and white, crisp linens — letting the dramatic public spaces do the storytelling.
