The Lygon Arms
Grand English coaching inn — honey-stone walls, vaulted ceilings, log fires, antique furnishings — but with enough modern comfort (Technogym, retractable-roof pool, contemporary Annex rooms) to keep it from feeling like a museum.
Request a Main House room for the most character: original wood beams, slanting floors, and fireplaces. The Annex rooms are newer and cleaner but have less personality.
Why It Matters
Over 650 years of history, a guestbook that includes Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Prince Philip, and Kylie Minogue. Named Best Hotel in the Cotswolds. The Charles I Suite is genuinely the room where a king plotted before battle. The Grill restaurant has won Best Fine Dining in the Cotswolds.
The Lygon Arms is a Grade II* listed coaching inn on the main High Street of Broadway — the Cotswolds village that everyone seems to end up in eventually. The building dates to the 14th century (first written record 1377), and King Charles I slept here before heading into the Civil War. Oliver Cromwell did the same before the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Today the 86-room hotel balances that extraordinary historical weight with a proper spa, celebrity-chef dining from James Martin, and three acres of private gardens. It's old England done seriously well, without the stuffiness.
