Why It Matters
Malaysia's first Autograph Collection property, and one of the country's few surviving pre-war luxury hotels. Originally commissioned by the Loke Wan Tho family estate and designed by Dutch firm Keyes and Dowdeswell, it blended Neo-Classical form with Art Deco detail from the start. Stars and politicians alike stayed here during the colonial era. The two Majestic Suites — over 100 sqm each — remain the most coveted rooms in KL for those who want history on their walls.
Built in 1932 and gazetted as a national heritage building, The Majestic Hotel is one of Kuala Lumpur's most storied addresses. It sat empty for years — serving as the National Art Gallery from 1984 to 1998 — before YTL Hotels undertook a meticulous restoration, eventually bringing it into Marriott's Autograph Collection as Malaysia's first entry in the brand. The result is two very different hotels in one: the original Majestic Wing, where 47 heritage suites feature Art Deco details, claw-foot bathtubs, and black-and-white chequered bathrooms; and a modern 15-story Tower Wing with 253 contemporary rooms and sweeping KL skyline views, connected by a climate-controlled walkway.
