The Maritime Hotel
Nautical-modernist boutique. Ship-cabin rooms with teak walls, five-foot porthole windows, blue wool carpeting, and penny-tile marble bathrooms. The lobby feels like an old library on a cruise ship — fireplaces, bookshelves, ocean murals, velvet armchairs. Not flashy, but genuinely cool.
All rooms face westward — ask for a higher floor for the best Hudson River views through the porthole
Why It Matters
Genuine architectural landmark by a Frank Lloyd Wright-trained architect. The porthole windows aren't decorative — they're the building's original 1968 facade. First luxury hotel in the Meatpacking/Chelsea area. TAO Downtown, a massive Pan-Asian restaurant and nightclub, operates in the hotel's vaulted basement space.
A 12-story landmark in West Chelsea, built in 1968 by New Orleans architect Albert Ledner as the headquarters for the National Maritime Union. The porthole windows, teak-lined rooms, and white ceramic tile exterior aren't a design concept layered on by an interior decorator — they're the building itself. It opened as a hotel in 2003, making it the first luxury property in the neighborhood, and it remains one of Manhattan's most architecturally distinctive boutique hotels, sitting right across from Chelsea Market and a short walk from The High Line.
