The Mitchelton Hotel Nagambie
Architect-designed winery retreat. Understated luxury with an Australian country edge — natural materials, earthy palette, serious wine pedigree. More grown-up weekender than resort. Couples and wine-focused travelers dominate.
Book a river-facing room over vineyard — the Goulburn River views at sunrise are exceptional
Why It Matters
One of regional Victoria's most architecturally distinctive hotels, designed by Hecker Guthrie and set within a working winery estate. The Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art — featuring large-scale works from over 15 Indigenous art centers — is genuinely exceptional and not the kind of thing you find at comparable properties. The cellar door is steps from the lobby.
Sitting on the banks of the Goulburn River, The Mitchelton Hotel is the accommodation centerpiece of the Mitchelton Winery Estate — a striking, blocky architectural statement set across 280 acres of vineyards and native bushland, 90 minutes from Melbourne. Australian design firm Hecker Guthrie shaped the interiors: earthy tones, floor-to-ceiling windows, privately commissioned artworks, timber joinery. Every one of the 58 rooms opens onto a private balcony facing either the river or the vines. It's genuinely self-contained — restaurant, day spa, cellar door, Aboriginal art gallery, infinity pool, and a 55-metre watchtower with a sunset bar are all on the estate.

The estate's 55-metre landmark tower offers 360-degree panoramic views over the vineyard, river valley, and surrounding countryside. The Sundown Room at the top is a popular perch for pre-dinner drinks — particularly spectacular at sunset.
Complimentary bike rentals available for guests to explore the estate and surroundings. E-bikes available for exploring beyond the immediate grounds. Frequently praised in guest reviews.
The Goulburn River runs directly alongside the estate. Guests can fish in the river — the Michelin Guide notes that guests can theoretically catch their own dinner from the next-door river.
Scenic walking routes through the 280-acre estate, past vineyards, along the Goulburn River, and through the native bushland. Self-guided.
One of the estate's genuine standout experiences. The gallery exhibits large-scale works from over 15 Aboriginal art centers and communities across Australia, including local Taungurung artists. A transformed Vietnam War-era Land Rover — painted by 200+ Aboriginal artists — is a permanent centerpiece. Open 7 days, 10am–4pm. Works are available for purchase online and in-gallery.
Seated guided tasting of Mitchelton's wine portfolio at the on-estate cellar door. Open daily 11am–5pm. Bookings are essential.
On-site pickleball court, cited in recent guest reviews as a popular activity.
