The Museum Hotel Antakya
Contemporary-industrial architecture draped over an ancient site. Think exposed steel beams, walkway bridges, and container-like room units floating above 2,300-year-old mosaics. Unapologetically modern inside too — but every surface references history.
Request a museum-view room — they face inward over the archaeological site and you can look down at Roman mosaics from your window at any hour
Why It Matters
Home to the world's largest single-piece floor mosaic (over 1,000 sqm), nearly 30,000 archaeological artifacts, Roman baths, and a 2nd-century AD Pegasus mosaic — all visible from hotel walkways and inward-facing rooms. Designed by award-winning Turkish architect Emre Arolat. The on-site Necmi Asfuroğlu Archaeology Museum is free for hotel guests.
The Museum Hotel Antakya is a five-star hotel literally built over a 2,300-year-old archaeological site — not next to one, not attached to one. When the Asfuroğlu family broke ground for a hotel in 2010, they hit ancient Antakya. What followed was a decade-long odyssey: a year of excavation by 35 archaeologists and 120 workers, a total cost overhaul, and eventually a 90% steel structure rising on 66 hand-placed columns on 20,000 tons of structural steel — three times the steel in the Eiffel Tower. The rooms are prefabricated modular units stacked above the open archaeological site; the ones facing inward look straight down at Roman mosaics, baths, and a 3rd-century BC wall. It reopened October 1, 2024, after being closed for repairs following the devastating February 2023 earthquake.
