The National Exchange Hotel
Gold Rush Victorian meets modern California boutique. Bold botanical wallpapers, curated antiques, rich colors and patterns. Each room is genuinely unique. The energy is artsy and a bit theatrical — this is a hotel that leans into its own mythology, including the infamous Lola Montez connection.

Why It Matters
California Historic Landmark #899 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. Reportedly the site where the meeting that led to the founding of Pacific Gas and Electric took place in 1898. Past guests include Mark Twain, Herbert Hoover, and Andrew Johnson. The 2021 renovation brought it back to genuine boutique-hotel standard without erasing any of the character.
One of the oldest continuously operating hotels west of the Rockies, the National Exchange Hotel opened in 1856 during the Gold Rush and never really stopped. It's been thoroughly renovated — a three-year, floor-to-rafters overhaul completed around 2021 — but the bones are all still there: 18-inch-thick English-bond brick walls, original high ceilings, creaking staircases, cast iron balconies overlooking Broad Street. The result is 38 rooms that feel genuinely historic rather than cosplay-historic, with Beautyrest Black Label mattresses, Italian Mascioni linens, and Fellow electric kettles sitting comfortably alongside 160-year-old woodwork and one-of-a-kind antiques. No TVs, deliberately. The bar and Lola restaurant are serious draws for non-guests too.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Hotel guests have access to the 2nd-floor Grand Lounge and its balcony overlooking Broad Street — a spot to enjoy morning coffee or evening drinks with commanding views of the historic district.
The hotel is a natural base for exploring South Yuba River State Park, Bear Yuba Land Trust trails, Empire Mine State Historic Park, and numerous foothill hiking routes. The hotel's seasonal explore guides and maps point guests to the best trails.
The hotel provides hand-drawn maps to local wildflower walks in the Sierra Foothills with certain spring packages. The hillsides bloom dramatically through mid-May.
Monday nights at the National Bar typically feature a live local band. The bar also hosts other musical events throughout the year. Open to hotel guests and the public.
Seasonal murder mystery dinner events held in the hotel. Guests staying on those nights receive 15% off their room rate. Dinner tickets sold separately through Ambrosia Events.
Nevada City offers a self-guided ghost tour around town for $10, perfect given the hotel's own storied and famously haunted reputation (it was featured on Ghost Adventures in 2012).
Two-night package combining a stay at The National Exchange with a stay at sister hotel The Holbrooke in Grass Valley. Includes chef's tasting dinners, hosted cocktails, guided history tours, a Sierra Foothills hike, and a visit to the Nevada Theatre. From $1,395 + tax, single occupancy. Reservations by phone only: 530-575-0495.
