The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius
Barefoot luxury with genuine intimacy. Thatched villas, sunken marble baths, open-air spa treatment rooms where you can hear birds over the ocean breeze. The staff-to-guest ratio is high and the service is famously attentive without being intrusive — classic Oberoi hallmarks. Nothing loud or flashy about the design; everything is purposefully earthy and calm.
The Gunpowder Room (adults-only, Tue & Thu) and The Herb Trail (Sat & Sun) require 48 hours advance reservation — book before or immediately upon arrival
Why It Matters
Two Michelin Keys (2025) and ranked 3rd Best Resort in the Indian Ocean by Condé Nast Traveller UK Readers' Choice 2025. The architecture is unlike anything else on the island — a collaboration resulting in buildings that read more like landscape than hotel. The Gunpowder Room, an actual restored 18th-century French colonial battery, is one of the most distinctive dining venues in the Indian Ocean.
Twenty acres of sub-tropical gardens on Turtle Bay, a protected marine park on Mauritius's northwest coast. The resort is low-rise, thatched, and deliberately quiet — stacked volcanic boulder walls dyed the same rust-red as the surrounding landscape, sugar cane thatch roofs, and most of the public spaces opening straight onto the water. There are only 71 rooms and villas, which keeps it feeling more like a private estate than a resort. The west-facing position means sunset views over the Indian Ocean every single evening.
