Specifically request a Grande Room or Tchoupitoulas King to get natural light — Interior Rooms are windowless and that's easy to miss when booking

Why It Matters

Named #1 Hotel in New Orleans by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice in both 2017 and 2023. Home to Compère Lapin, named top restaurant in New Orleans by The New York Times (2025) and one of OpenTable's Top 100 Hotel Restaurants in America. The building itself dates to 1854 — its original street address was 77 Tchoupitoulas, which is where the hotel gets its name.

A converted 1854 coffee warehouse — later a maritime chandlery supplying rope, canvas, and tobacco to sailing ships — the Old No. 77 sits at the edge of the Warehouse Arts District, three blocks from the French Quarter and a short walk from the Convention Center. Exposed brick, original timber, and rotating art from New Orleans Center for Creative Arts students fill 167 rooms. The real reason to stay here is Compère Lapin: Chef Nina Compton's James Beard Award-winning restaurant is legitimately one of the best tables in the city, and hotel guests get priority access.

Artist Loft Suite

The standout room at Old No. 77, created in collaboration with Where Y'Art. A king bed, hardwood floors, exposed brick, and full walls of art curated from local New Orleans artists. Has a sitting area with pull-out couch and a walk-in shower. The largest standard accommodation at the hotel and the one most likely to leave an impression.

Classic Rooms

Tucked into the building's interior, these rooms are quieter but trade street noise for lightwell windows — smaller openings that face the building's internal courtyard rather than the outside. Good if you're a light sleeper. Available in queen, king, or two doubles.

Grande Rooms

The bread-and-butter room at Old No. 77. Big outward-facing windows flood the space with natural light, exposed brick walls, and student artwork from NOCA on the walls. Choose from queen, king, or two double beds. These are the rooms to request if you want daylight.

Interior Rooms

Completely windowless — the hotel leans into it, marketing these to 'up-all-nighters' and 'witching-hour poets.' But be honest with yourself before booking: no natural light, no view. The upside is zero street noise and the rooms run 350–400 sqft, which is actually generous. Good for night-shift workers and anyone who finds New Orleans nightlife irresistible.

Studio Room

Built for the solo creative traveler. A custom-made loft bed sits above a dedicated art workspace — easel included. One of the most genuinely original hotel rooms in New Orleans. A single lofted twin bed means it's not for couples, but for the right solo traveler it's a standout.

Tchoupitoulas King

The eccentric older sister of the Grande Rooms — the hotel's own words. A king-bed room with floor-to-ceiling windows and the full NOCA art treatment. Named for the street the hotel sits on, and arguably the most characterful standard room in the house.
