Why It Matters
Portugal's first and only member of the global Beyond Green sustainability alliance. The palace dates to 1533 and was sensitively restored rather than gutted — original frescoed ceilings and coffered halls are intact.
A 16th-century aristocratic palace turned five-star hotel in the dead center of Lisbon. The interiors are the work of designer Jaime Beriestain, whose contemporary minimalist approach plays against the palace's original coffered ceilings, hand-painted frescoes, and enormous windows. The result is 82 rooms that feel genuinely calm and elegant rather than museum-stuffy.
