Book Madame Lou's Room if you want the most theatrical experience — it's the flagship and leans fully into the Lou Wooster mythology

Why It Matters

One of Birmingham's first design-forward boutique hotels, listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Managed by Lark Hotels and rooted in a genuinely compelling local legend. The in-building cocktail bar, Bygones, has quickly become a destination in its own right.

The Painted Lady occupies the 1895 Eyer-Raden Building in Birmingham's Automotive Historic District — a sandstone-brick structure with a genuinely wild backstory. The hotel takes its name from Louise 'Lou' Wooster, a local madam who became a public health hero by opening her brothel as a cholera ward during the city's 1873 epidemic. All 22 rooms lean hard into that drama: vivid colors, bold graphics, and maximalist design layered over well-preserved 19th-century bones. Public spaces are minimal, and there is no elevator, so the original staircase is part of the experience whether you want it to be or not.

5 room types available

Camellia Garden Room

Camellia Garden Room

The brightest and most airy of the room categories. Floral botanical wallpaper with birds and blooms channels a Southern estate garden. Available in king or queen, spread across the 2nd and 3rd floors. A solid choice if you want color without going full maximalist.

Celestial Study Room

The moodiest option in the house. Star-chart wallpaper and dark, dramatic tones create a contemplative atmosphere that's part observatory, part speakeasy. King bed only. Located on either the 2nd or 3rd floor depending on availability.

Madame Lou's Room

The flagship. Named directly for Louise Wooster herself, this maximalist king room goes all-in: dark blue walls, floral wallpaper, bold botanical layering, and a vibe that reads as part Victorian parlor, part Southern rebel. The most singular room in the hotel and the one that best tells the building's story.

Pink Pagoda Room

Pink Pagoda Room

A monochromatic Chinoiserie fever dream in the best possible way. Pink walls, red-patterned accent wallpaper, and a king bed make this one of the more requested rooms. It's on the 3rd floor, so stairs are part of the deal. One room only, so book early.

The entry-level room category, but far from basic. Lattice-patterned accent walls give a garden-party feel, anchored by plush bedding and a sleek walk-in shower. Available with either a king or queen bed, making it the most flexible option for solo travelers and couples alike.
