Founded in 1971 and still family-run, The Portobello Hotel is London's original rock & roll bolthole — two converted neo-classical townhouses on a quiet Notting Hill street with 21 individually designed rooms. After a recent restoration, the eclectic, heavily textured aesthetic that once seemed dated is very much back in fashion. No two rooms are the same, no pool, no spa, no gym — but that's not the point.

Best Room
The signature room and the most talked-about in the hotel. Degournay wallpaper sets the backdrop, with rich golden fabrics throughout. Georgian windows frame garden views. The centrepiece is the famous circular bed — and next to it, the legendary Victorian freestanding bathtub with tubular shower. If you're going to splurge on one room in Notting Hill, this is it.

Better Room
Mostly located on the top floor in the eaves of the building, which means pitched ceilings and a cosy, nest-like feel. Views over rooftops, gardens, or Notting Hill streets. All have showers; two of them also have Victorian bathtubs. The slight trade-off is ceiling height in spots, but the views and atmosphere more than compensate.

Good Room
The entry-level option and the most compact. Located on the ground and second floors at the front of the hotel, overlooking the quiet street. Each one has a distinct personality — filled with one-of-a-kind pieces and little curiosities. Shower only, no bath. Good value for a solo traveller or a couple who won't be spending much time in the room.

Great Room
On upper floors with king-size beds and furnishings and fabrics sourced directly from Portobello Road market. One room on the first floor has high ceilings and gorgeous French doors. Two more on the third floor — one with a bathtub. Street-facing with plenty of Notting Hill character.

Marvellous Room
The sweet spot for couples or small families. Five rooms total — four overlook the private gardens and one is on the lower ground floor with its own private patio, ideal for a quiet morning coffee. Most have a bathtub alongside a drench shower, plus a lounge area. A couple of rooms include a double sofa bed for families.

Three rooms, each with its own character. One has a canopy bed, another a royal four-poster, the third a private patio with hidden seating. All face the garden or street and include separate showers and freestanding bathtubs. Generous living areas. These are the most theatrical rooms in the hotel short of the Best Room.
