Why It Matters

A Grade II-listed, red-brick 18th-century country house set in 16 acres of West Berkshire parkland — once the home of Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. It reopened after a full refurbishment as The Retreat, a 55-room boutique hotel with 9 additional Residence Suites, under the Signet Collection banner. The vibe is cheerful and genuinely relaxed: honesty pantries stocked with biscuits and beer, a 4pm complimentary pour from Lay & Wheeler wine merchants, homemade madeleines left at your door each morning, and a proper spa that day visitors come for as much as overnight guests.

Percy Shelley Suite
The flagship suite, named after the Romantic poet who once lived here. At 58.4m², it has a superking bed, freestanding roll-top bathtub, a separate lounge, and a walk-in shower bathroom — all positioned to take in the parkland views. This is the one to book for an anniversary or a proper splurge.

Part of the standalone Residence Suites within the estate grounds. Fully equipped with a kitchen (oven, induction hob), ensuite bathrooms, private parking and high-speed WiFi. Ideal for families, multigenerational groups or longer countryside stays — you get full access to hotel restaurants and spa, but the freedom of your own space.
