The Retreat Elcot Park
Quirky British country house meets considered contemporary design. Think Taylor & Turner interiors, Bramley toiletries, a wellies-to-borrow wall, and a whiskey snug alongside a pan-Asian restaurant. It doesn't take itself too seriously, which is the point.

Why It Matters
One of the few country house hotels in the Thames Valley where the spa is a genuine draw in its own right — with wood-fired hot tubs, a salt floatation tank, a Longevity Lane biohacking station, and an outdoor infinity pool with North Wessex Downs views. The Percy Bysshe Shelley connection is real; the poet lived here with his family. Now an SLH member.
A Grade II-listed, red-brick 18th-century country house set in 16 acres of West Berkshire parkland — once the home of Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. It reopened after a full refurbishment as The Retreat, a 55-room boutique hotel with 9 additional Residence Suites, under the Signet Collection banner. The vibe is cheerful and genuinely relaxed: honesty pantries stocked with biscuits and beer, a 4pm complimentary pour from Lay & Wheeler wine merchants, homemade madeleines left at your door each morning, and a proper spa that day visitors come for as much as overnight guests.
