Japan's first Ritz-Carlton opened in Osaka and it makes zero concessions to local aesthetics. The lobby channels an 18th-century British aristocratic residence; a doorman in a silk hat greets you at the door. All 291 rooms occupy floors 24 to 37 of a mixed-use Umeda high-rise, meaning the only Japanese thing about the building is its address. But the formula works: it's been the only Forbes Five-Star hotel in Osaka four years running, La Baie holds a Michelin star, and the 2024 renovation refreshed rooms without ditching the European bones.

The entrance is lined with tateiwa stone, the bathroom features cedar-paneled walls and a granite soaking tub, and a tokonoma alcove anchors the aesthetic.
