The Rockaway Hotel
Scandinavian minimalism meets NYC beach-town cool. Natural materials — teak, linen, rattan, wool, leather — keep things grounded. Art is everywhere. The vibe is laid-back but not sloppy.

Why It Matters
The only hotel directly on the Rockaway Beach strip, a part of NYC that most tourists completely ignore. Part of Mr & Mrs Smith and the World of Hyatt loyalty program. Over 150 pieces of local and nationally recognized art, curated by a dedicated Chief Social Impact Officer. The hotel runs a free hospitality training program for Queens locals.
The Rockaway Hotel + Spa is a Scandi-style boutique hotel sitting one block from the Atlantic on the Rockaway Peninsula — New York City's only surfing beach. It's 84,000 square feet of teak-and-linen rooms, a heated outdoor pool, a sixth-floor rooftop bar with dual ocean and bay views, and a full spa. Owned by third-generation Rockaway locals Terence and Dan Tubridy, the place genuinely feels like it belongs here: staff are Queens neighbors, over 150 curated artworks hang throughout the building, and the hotel actively partners with local surf schools, breweries, and community farms.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 150 pieces of art from local and nationally renowned artists are displayed throughout the hotel. Each piece was curated by the hotel's Chief Social Impact Officer, Michi Jigarjian. A self-guided wander through the lobby and corridors is worth the time.
The beach is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Guests receive complimentary use of beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas. Rockaway is NYC's only surfing beach, with the best surf break near 67th Street and quieter stretches between 105th–116th Street.
The hotel lends beach cruiser bikes to guests, perfect for riding the 5-mile boardwalk. A genuinely popular perk.
The hotel's Mr & Mrs Smith listing highlights the hike east to Fort Tilden — through trails to abandoned WWII concrete batteries. Battery Harris East offers views of the ocean, NYC skyline, and wild greenery. The 5-mile boardwalk starts one block away.
Open from sunrise to sunset. Hotel guests get exclusive access to the loungers upholstered in Sunbrella fabric. Non-guests can purchase day passes. In winter this transitions to the Winter Pool House.
The hotel offers a range of activities for children including crafts, painting classes, and water safety sessions. No formal kids club or crèche.
Daily yoga and fitness classes on the hotel's ocean-facing yoga deck. Classes include hatha yoga, vinyasa flows, and sculpting cardio.
Hotel guests receive OrangeTheory gym access during their stay.
On-site partnership with Locals Surf School. Rockaway's waves are described as relatively forgiving for beginners. Book through the hotel.
