The Ryder Hotel
Midcentury coastal bohemian. Think Kerouac-meets-Lowcountry: breezy, intentionally laid-back, with a poolside-party energy and a lobby vinyl setup that invites lingering.
Pool loungers are first-come, first-served for hotel guests — get out early on weekends. Non-guests can access via day passes or cabana bookings through Little Palm.
Why It Matters
One of the very few downtown Charleston hotels with an outdoor pool and a genuinely fun-first personality. Named #3 hotel in Charleston by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2025, featured on Travel + Leisure's Best Hotels in Charleston, and AFAR's Hotels We Love. The Gear Garage — with bikes, longboards, Polaroid cameras, boomboxes, and coolers — is a nice differentiator for beach-day adventurers.
The Ryder is a 91-room midcentury-inspired boutique hotel on Meeting Street that opened in 2021 after a full gut renovation of the 1958 King Charles Hotel. The design runs earthy reds, organic hues, rattan accents, and whimsical coastal art — a deliberate contrast to Charleston's antebellum grandeur that somehow fits right in. The pool deck is the social heart of the property: a heated, retro-shaped splash with pastel gingham parasols, marshmallow loungers, and Little Palm's tropical cocktails on demand.
