The Samling Hotel
Low-key lakeside luxury. Country house without the stuffiness. Interiors run to dove grey, slate blue and forest green — colours borrowed straight from the landscape outside. Hypnos beds, Carrara marble bathrooms, and enough space to actually decompress.
Book the restaurant well in advance — it's open Tuesday to Saturday evenings only, and external diners can book too
Why It Matters
One of only a handful of hotels in the Lake District with a Michelin-starred restaurant on site. Just 12 rooms means the service-to-guest ratio is high, and the 67-acre estate — complete with ornamental water gardens, kitchen gardens and woodland trails — gives it a scale most small hotels can't match.
The Samling is a late 18th-century Georgian house perched on a hillside above Lake Windermere — 12 rooms spread across 67 acres of gardens, meadows and woodland. It holds a Michelin star, an award-winning wine cellar, and a hot tub that The Sunday Times once declared one of the best views in the world. Small, quiet, and completely unflashy about being exceptional.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The productive kitchen gardens supply the restaurant with herbs, vegetables and microgreens. Guests can explore the gardens and see what's feeding the evening menu.
The hotel curates a list of third-party guided experiences across the Lake District, sent with booking confirmation. Options include prehistoric stone circles, Arthurian legend sites, waterfall climbing, lake rowing, winter fell-walking with National Park assessors, and tours of Dove Cottage (Wordsworth) and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top.
Cascading ornamental water gardens with paths and bridges, a Georgian arbour, and views across the lake. Fed by local springs channelled under the hillside.
Self-guided walking trails through the 67-acre estate, taking in ornamental water gardens, wildflower meadows, ancient woodland, and the kitchen gardens. The estate sits at 350 feet above the lake.
A secluded hot tub hidden in the woodland, celebrated by The Sunday Times as having one of the best views in the world. Looks south across meadows and down to Lake Windermere. Champagne service, robes and flip-flops included. Must be pre-booked.
The Samling's rebuilt jetty on Lake Windermere allows sailing guests to dock and be escorted up the original stone stairs to the hotel. A genuinely memorable way to arrive. Sailing guests can stop for lunch, afternoon tea, or check in for a night.
Bespoke wine sessions with the sommeliers — exploring a region, a particular vintage, or a curated surprise. The hotel uses the Coravin system to allow tasting of precious bottles without opening them fully. Bespoke pairings are priced individually.
