The StandardX, Melbourne
Raw, art-forward, neighborhood-first. The mood is deliberately more local hangout than hotel — loose, creative, community-driven. Think DJ sets and tarot nights, not concierge desks and turn-down service.
Come on a weekend — the Rose Street Artists' Market is next door and staff will tip you off on the best stalls
Why It Matters
The world's first StandardX property — conceived as a pared-down, more accessible offshoot of The Standard brand (now under Hyatt). It's squarely in Fitzroy, one of Melbourne's most interesting creative suburbs, with the Rose Street Artists' Market literally next door. Art is embedded everywhere: local commissions, ongoing cultural programming, and First Nations partnerships.
The StandardX opened in Fitzroy in August 2024 as the first outpost of The Standard's rebellious younger sibling brand — designed for creative neighborhoods at wallet-friendlier prices. The weathered-steel facade by Woods Bagot and candy-apple-red revolving door announce this isn't your average hotel. Inside, 125 rooms are compact but colorful, layered with Jane Sinclair woodwork carvings, terrazzo floors, macramé columns by artist Sarah Parkes, and a lobby that reads more like a Soho artist's loft circa 1982 than a hotel check-in.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel runs ongoing cultural programming including First Nations art partnerships (Yarrenyty Arltere Artists from Alice Springs via Agency Projects), fashion collaborations (Neuw Denim, Deering), and editorial events. These are woven into the stay rather than ticketed add-ons.
The hotel runs pop-up wine and beverage tastings with producers — past editions have included a tasting with NON (non-alcoholic producer). These rotate and are announced through the Happenings section.
Weekend DJ sets at the On Top rooftop bar. Guests only. The vibe is relaxed — sundowners and spins, not a nightclub.
No on-site gym. Instead, guests get passes to nearby Snap Fitness and a complimentary fitness class at Upstate Studios.
The Rose Street Artists' Market runs on weekends directly next door to the hotel. Staff are happy to tip you off on which stalls to hit. It's one of Melbourne's best maker markets.
Monthly evening event combining cocktails and tarot readings. Runs in The Loft. Billed as monthly nights for cocktail lovers and the cosmically inclined.
Recurring Thursday evening event in The Loft fireplace lounge — laid-back tunes, drinks, and the soft crackle of vinyl. A genuine neighbourhood ritual rather than a packaged hotel experience.
