Why It Matters
It sits at the heart of Malton's food scene — itself crowned Yorkshire's Food Capital by the late Antonio Carluccio and named Prue Leith's Favourite Foodie Town. The hotel's own back yard, literally, is the Talbot Yard Food Court: a gin distillery, coffee roastery, gelateria, baker, butcher and macaron maker all in the old coach house. The Coaching Inn Group has been named Which? Hotel Group of the Year (large chains, 2025/26) and Best UK Accommodation Operator at the 2025 Publican Awards.
A Grade II*-listed 17th-century coaching inn sitting right in the centre of Malton — a town with a legitimate claim to being Yorkshire's food capital. The Talbot has 26 individually designed rooms, a locally obsessed restaurant led by Chef James Gibson, and a wood-panelled bar that practically demands a Rare Bird Gin cocktail. Bold, colourful interiors swap out country-house chintz for velvet headboards in saffron and teal throws, flea-market furniture, and botany-themed art, while the historic bones — decorative plasterwork, open fireplaces, original wooden floors — stay firmly in place.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Based in a converted old congregational chapel a short walk from the hotel. Tom Naylor-Leyland (hotel owner) is the director. Courses specialise in game, seafood, baking, patisserie, chocolates and other Yorkshire-focused topics. Suitable for all skill levels. Book in advance — popular with hotel guests.
A three-hour walking tour through Malton's artisan food scene, led by (or inspired by) hotel owner Tom Naylor-Leyland — the man behind the town's food revival. The tour stops at Malton's best small shops and producers, with tasting stops along the way. Very much the best way to understand why Malton has the food-capital tag.
Takes place on the second Saturday of every month from March to November in St Michael's Church market place, a short walk from the hotel. Specialist food and drink stalls, street food vendors, and live music. Worth timing a stay around.
The hotel's grounds include gardens that stretch toward the River Derwent, and there are fields and meadows directly accessible from the property. Bring proper footwear — the paths can get muddy. The best way to earn your dinner.
Right in the Talbot Yard next door. Master distiller Matt leads a hands-on gin-making session starting with a tour of the distillery and an introduction to Florence — the distillery's 300-litre copper pot still. Then you create your own bottle of gin using botanicals of your choice. Free G&Ts along the way help the creative process. Book directly with the distillery.
Directly behind the hotel in the restored historic coach yard. Home to six independent artisan producers, all carrying the Made in Malton badge: a gin distillery (Rare Bird), coffee roastery (Roost), gelateria (Groovy Moo), baker (Bluebird Bakery), macaron maker, and craft butcher. Not a hotel-run activity, but guests can walk out the back door and be there in seconds.
