The Tiing Tejakula Villas
Tropical brutalism meets Balinese craftsmanship. Raw concrete and bamboo dominate, interiors are deliberately spare — wood, rattan, and a signature round indoor bathtub tucked under a light well at the center of each villa. The overall feel is architectural and intimate rather than resort-glam.
Ask for an upper-floor villa for elevated ocean views over the canopy.
Why It Matters
Winner of the 2020 Dezeen Award for Hospitality Building (public vote, over 60,000 voters) and the 2021 Loop Design Award. The architecture is genuinely striking — a red communal pool greets arrivals as a bold counterpoint to the surrounding jungle. It's one of the very few properties on Bali's north coast with this level of design pedigree.
The Tiing is a 14-villa brutalist-inspired resort on Bali's remote north coast, designed by Australian architect Nic Brunsdon in collaboration with local studio Manguning. Concrete walls cast against bamboo formwork give each villa a ridged, textural surface — rooms are laid out as funnels that frame the ocean in one direction and the jungle-backed mountains in the other. It sits right on a black sand beach in the fishing village of Tejakula, well away from the tourist circuit in the south.
