Why It Matters

Just five freestanding suites (plus a separate private villa) in a restored 1780 mansion with over 4,000 Santorinian artifacts. Gianni Versace booked it for an entire month in 1989. Named to the Robb Report 100 Resorts: Europe and Fodor's 100 Hotel Awards. Featured on Discovery Channel's 'World's Most Successful' series. The Maria Callas Terrace infinity pool — added in 2010 — is considered one of the finest caldera-view spots on the island.

Five individually themed suites carved out of an 18th-century Cycladic mansion on the caldera edge in Firostefani. Art collector and owner Dimitris Tsitouras started transforming it in 1985 — color schemes with British designer David Hicks, a Picasso ceramic in the bedroom, a bronze bust of Maria Callas by the infinity pool. Each house tells a completely different story through its antiques, paintings and objects. There is no template here — this is the opposite of the bare-white Santorini hotel.

The House of Portraits
Suite

The House of Portraits

The original 18th-century core of the mansion — this is the oldest structure, and it shows in the best possible way. Named for the collection of framed portraits, oil paintings and philhellenic engravings on the walls. Split across two floors with two bedrooms, making it a solid choice for families or two couples. A 19th-century wooden baptismal font serves as the coffee table. Two gold-framed candelabra, Russian icons, and a Sappho bust by an Italian sculptor set the tone.

The white marble bathroom has a 19th-century gold-plated Venetian mirror and charcoal sketches of male nudes by an anonymous Greek artist. Patio has a side sea view.
