Why It Matters
One of the finest surviving examples of post-war Miami Modern (MiMo) motel architecture in the country. Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 2014. The New York Times called it 'retro chic.' The property claims Rat Pack mythology (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin), though historians note those legends are associated with a now-gone Vagabond Club downtown. Real or not, the lore sticks.
A restored 1953 MiMo motel on Biscayne Boulevard that punches well above its modest 42-room footprint. The sign out front still says 'motel' — and there's charm in not changing it. Designed by architect Robert Swartburg and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this two-floor property got a full renovation in 2012, bringing back the teal, pink, and original terrazzo floors without losing the genuine '50s bones. It's nowhere near South Beach, and that's entirely the point.

The largest standard offering, running 310 to 355 square feet. King bed with Italian hypo-allergenic mattress and 300-thread-count linens. The upgrade perks are real: a sitting area with sofa, pull-out sofa bed (fits one child under 6), mini-fridge, and a Keurig. Pool or courtyard views depending on assignment. These are the rooms that tend to get flagged in reviews for actually feeling spacious.

The workhorse room — retro-chic king with hypo-allergenic mattress, plush bedding, a sitting bench, and a work desk. Arranged around the courtyard, so pool views are common.

The Vagabond sits in the heart of the MiMo Biscayne Boulevard Historic District — a strip of 1950s–60s mid-century modern buildings unlike anything else in the US. The hotel itself is one of the finest surviving examples; walking the block and neighboring properties is a mini design history tour on its own.
The mermaid mosaic pool and surrounding courtyard are the social heart of the property. Oversized lounge chairs, hammocks, daybeds with umbrellas, and an outdoor shower. The courtyard's plant-covered mixed-use spaces give it a resort-within-the-city feel.
Seasonal live music and events by the pool have historically been part of the Vagabond experience. Check with the hotel directly for current programming, as the pool bar status has fluctuated.
