Why It Matters
One of Portugal's most recognizable wine tourism properties — the barrel suites won the Global Winner in Architecture and Landscape at the Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2020, and the estate holds a MICHELIN Key designation. Quinta da Pacheca was also among the first wineries in the Douro to bottle wine under its own label, dating to 1738.
An 18th-century working winery on the edge of the Douro that became a hotel and then kept going. Quinta da Pacheca has been producing wine since 1738, and the estate now operates as a 5-star property under the Pacheca Group — with three accommodation styles, a grape-inspired spa, and a restaurant run by Chef Carlos Pires. The most talked-about option is the barrel suites: 10 giant wine barrel-shaped pods sitting right in the vineyards, each 35 sqm with a stargazing skylight and a private deck. But the restored 18th-century manor house (Classic Wing) and the sleek Modern Wing are strong contenders if you want more square footage.

Classic Wing Room
Housed in the restored 18th-century manor at the heart of the estate — the building where Quinta da Pacheca was born. There are 16 rooms in this wing, each individually decorated with details evoking the estate's wine heritage. Original architectural elements were preserved during restoration, with modern comforts added discreetly. Warm atmosphere, historically styled interiors. Some rooms offer private balconies with Douro River and vineyard views.
Modern Wing Room
The newer accommodation wing with clean lines and contemporary design — bright, tranquil rooms offering views over the Douro River and surrounding vineyards. More polished and updated than the Classic Wing. Better suited for guests who want the winery setting without the period aesthetic.
Wine Barrel Suite
The property's signature rooms — 10 barrel-shaped pods standing in the vineyards, designed by architect Henrique Pinto. Each is 35 sqm and built from decommissioned wine barrels. Rounded custom-made furniture matches the barrel's interior curves. A porthole above the bed lets you stargaze from bed, and a full glass front faces the vineyard rows. Private outdoor deck included. Won 'Best Development' at the Lisbon Real Estate Show 2018 and Global Winner in Architecture & Landscape at the Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2020. Note: the size is genuinely cozy — great for couples, tight for anyone needing workspace.

During harvest season (September–October), guests can participate in the traditional grape harvest and foot-stomping — done the old-fashioned way with no machinery. All wine at the estate is still made using human foot stomping. Available by arrangement.
Daily guided tours of the vineyards, mill, and wine cellar. Tour ends with a tasting of four Quinta da Pacheca wines (two Douro table wines, two Port wines), accompanied by homemade jam and local cheese. Guests at the hotel receive complimentary wine tasting as part of their stay.
