Town Hall Hotel
Civic grandeur meets mid-century cool. Marble floors, ornate plasterwork, and wood-panelled former council chambers share space with clean-lined Scandinavian furniture, vintage collectibles, and rotating contemporary art. Eccentric but never try-hard.
The pool is in the basement beneath four floors of the original council building — go first thing for an empty lane and that glass-roof grey-sky effect
Why It Matters
Houses Da Terra, one of only two two-Michelin-starred restaurants in East London, run by Brazilian-born chef Rafael Cagali. The building itself won the RIBA Project of the Year in 2011. Every room is individually designed — none are cookie-cutter.
A Grade II listed Edwardian town hall opened in 1910, converted into a hotel in 2010 by Singaporean hotelier Loh Lik Peng and architect Rare Architecture. The result is genuinely striking: grand marble staircases and original Art Deco council chambers sit alongside Scandinavian-influenced bespoke furniture and a laser-cut aluminium extension bolted onto the back. Rooms are apartment-sized by London hotel standards, and the basement holds a 14-metre heated pool lit from above through four floors of old council building. But the real headline is Da Terra — a two-Michelin-star restaurant on the ground floor that happens to be one of only a handful in the whole of London.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Multidisciplinary artworks throughout the hotel, including commissioned pieces from London artists. Highlights include the 'Molly Malone' telephone near reception — an old-fashioned phone that plays site-specific poems read aloud by London taxi drivers.
The original council chamber is fully restored and open as an event/meeting space. Court/theatre-style layout with original fold-down wooden desks and antechamber. Popular wedding venue. Guests can explore the building's civic past throughout the corridors.
A small library of Faber & Faber books in the lobby available for guests to borrow during their stay. Board games also available for borrowing — a nice touch for longer stays.
Poolside gym, small but well-equipped — includes top-of-the-range Peloton bikes alongside standard weights and cardio equipment. Newly refurbished. Open 24 hours.
14-metre heated indoor pool in the hotel's basement, set beneath a glass skylight roof that looks up through four floors of the original council building. Marble-clad and atmospheric. Frequently empty early morning. Guests only.
