Vidago Palace
Grand historic palace meets contemporary luxury resort. Opulent Belle Époque interiors with silk De Gournay wallpapers and dark wood alongside a crisp white-marble thermal spa by Álvaro Siza Vieira. The atmosphere leans aristocratic rather than boutique — think wide corridors, formal service, and a ballroom restaurant.

Why It Matters
One of Portugal's most historic hotels, it was considered the most luxurious on the Iberian Peninsula at opening. Today it holds Leading Hotels of the World membership, a Michelin-listed gourmet restaurant, a thermal spa drawing from deep granite-rock mineral springs, and an 18-hole championship golf course — all within one 250-acre estate.
Opened on October 6th, 1910 — the same day Portugal became a republic — Vidago Palace was conceived by King D. Carlos I as an exclusive thermal retreat built around the healing mineral waters of the Vidago springs. The Belle Époque facade is genuinely grand: think original Venetian-style chandeliers, dark carved Portuguese wood furniture, and 200 sqm handmade wool carpets in the main dining room. Fully restored in 2010, it sits within a 250-acre woodland park about 90 minutes northeast of Porto, making it one of the most complete resort packages in northern Portugal.
