Vigilius Mountain Resort
Minimalist eco-luxury. Lots of pale larch wood, clay walls, floor-to-ceiling glass, and deep red accents. Calm is the operating principle — no TVs blaring, no nightclub energy, no road noise. Guests who come wanting stimulation will be disappointed. Guests who come wanting silence will not want to leave.
Non-guests can dine at Restaurant 1500 by reservation — the cable car and parking are included in the dinner package, plus a welcome aperitif.
Why It Matters
Accessible only by cable car. Italy's first ClimateHouse A-certified hotel. Designed by architect Matteo Thun. Michelin Key holder. EarthCheck certified. The hay bath in the spa is a genuine South Tyrolean tradition, not a gimmick.
Vigilius Mountain Resort sits at 1,500 meters on the car-free Vigiljoch above the town of Lana in South Tyrol. There is no road up here — the only way in is a 7-minute cable car ride, which immediately signals that this is not a normal hotel. Designed by Matteo Thun under the guiding principle 'Eco, not ego,' the building is constructed from just four materials — untreated larch wood, clay, stone, and glass — and blends into the alpine treeline so seamlessly you almost miss it. Italy's first ClimateHouse A-certified hotel, heated exclusively by locally sourced wood chips, and holding a Michelin Key, this 41-room property is one of Europe's best arguments for sustainable luxury.
