Vila Joya
Moorish-villa boutique with antiques, maritime art, terracotta floors, and whitewashed curved walls. Intimate, adults-only, and deliberately not trying to be a big resort. Think refined house party, not hotel lobby.
The half-board option (€185/person for the 4-course Michelin dinner) is genuinely good value compared to booking à la carte at €290 — pre-book it before arrival, as it must be reserved up to a week ahead.
Why It Matters
Two Michelin stars since 1999 — the first restaurant in Portugal to earn two — and a daily-changing menu that has never repeated itself in over 30 years. The property is also tiny (13 rooms and suites total), which means the service-to-guest ratio is unusually high.
Vila Joya started as a private family residence in 1982. Founder Claudia Jung gradually turned it into a discreet, adults-only coastal retreat — 4 rooms and 9 suites perched above Praia da Galé on the Algarve coast, with near-unbroken Atlantic views from every room. The draw here is two-fold: deeply personal service in a property that still feels like a home, and Chef Dieter Koschina's two-Michelin-star restaurant, which writes a brand new four-course menu every single day and was the first in Portugal to earn two stars.
