Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve
Coastal luxury resort with a serious wellness spine. Calm, unhurried, and rooted — white-washed walls, arched doorways, natural tones, and an atmosphere that favors slowing down over being seen.
Book Coral at least a week ahead — it's only open Thursday to Saturday evenings and fills up fast.
Why It Matters
Portugal's first thalassotherapy destination, with 60 years of history and a recent design overhaul by Quintana Partners Studio. The Coral restaurant was recognised in the Michelin Guide Portugal 2026. Five outdoor seawater pools, direct access to a secluded beach, and a rare Art Reef Vhils underwater exhibition offshore make it genuinely hard to replicate.
Vilalara has been perched above Praia das Gaivotas since 1966. Founded by English visionary George Ansley — who modeled it on Sardinia's Costa Smeralda — and thoroughly rethought by Barcelona studio Quintana Partners, it's a 60-year-old institution that doesn't feel like one. Eleven hectares of manicured gardens, five seawater pools, and a Michelin-listed restaurant sit between sandstone cliffs and the Atlantic. The thalassotherapy spa is one of Portugal's oldest and most serious, and the dining lineup has grown well beyond what you'd expect from a legacy resort.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A man-made reef offshore hosting an underwater art installation by Vhils, designed to champion marine conservation. A genuinely singular experience in a resort context — snorkelling or diving to encounter it.
Direct access to a secluded golden-sand beach below the cliffs. The beach club offers light bites, cocktails, sunrise meditation and moonlit evening strolls. Note: the beach has steep shelving — not ideal for very small children.
Exclusive estate visit, cellar tour, and guided tasting with Chef Telmo Pires. Explores local Algarvian wine production and vintages.
On-site bicycle rental for exploring the surrounding area.
Hands-on winemaking session where guests blend their own bottle, tailored to personal taste preferences. Done at a nearby winery estate.
Artisanal candle-making session — guests select scents and finishes in a sensory workshop.
Market visit followed by a hands-on cooking class preparing traditional cataplana (Algarvian seafood stew) using regional ingredients. You prepare it and eat it. One of the resort's most-talked-about experiences.
On-site olive oil tasting exploring the Algarve's olive oil production.
Dedicated space for children with arts and crafts, treasure hunts and activities. Parent-accompanied during shoulder season when staffing is reduced.
A guided walk through a local Algarve market with the resident chef, exploring local produce, stories, and finishing with a regional wine tasting.
Hands-on workshop in the Portuguese art of azulejos — guests design and paint their own Algarve-inspired ceramic tile to take home.
Three tennis courts, padel, and pickleball on-site. Classes and private lessons available. The resort has an exclusive partnership with Lux Tennis for professional coaching. The courts are also a social hub.
Five outdoor pools filled with Atlantic seawater — curved edges, sunlounger-lined terraces, lots of planting. One is heated. They're distributed across the resort so you can usually find a quieter one even in summer.
A private boat charter to crystal-clear coves along the Algarve coast, inspired by the founder's original voyage that led him to discover the site. Bookable through the resort.
