Villa Communico
Minimalist Japanese auberge with eclectic interiors said to draw inspiration from Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home — traditional wooden facade outside, unexpectedly warm and artful inside. Intimate, quiet, and food-obsessed.
Dinner service starts simultaneously for all tables at 18:30 — don't be late or you may be treated as a no-show
Why It Matters
Michelin one-star restaurant integrated into a five-room inn. Dinner is a single simultaneous seating at 18:30, only four tables, with wine pairings at an additional cost. The entire concept is built around primitive wood-fire cooking using hyperlocal Nara ingredients. No televisions. No clocks. Deer wander past the front door.
VILLA COMMUNICO is a five-suite gastronomic auberge on the edge of Nara Park, sitting at the foot of Mt. Wakakusa between Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The building dates to 1913 and was renovated into a deeply considered inn by husband-and-wife chef team Daiki and Naoko Horita, who opened their first restaurant, Communico, in 2018 before launching the villa in September 2024. Everything here revolves around one thing: fire. Chef Horita cooks every dish over a wood flame, drawing from the ancient 'noyaki' mountain-burning ritual held each January on Wakakusa itself. No two meals are ever the same.

How you'll actually spend your days.
During dinner, Chef Horita explains each dish, the cooking method, and the Nara producers behind each ingredient. The experience is built around the idea that guests understand where everything on the plate comes from — part philosophy lesson, part meal.
The property faces Mt. Wakakusa directly and is considered one of Nara's best spots for watching the sunset. The lounge and rooms are positioned to catch both the sunset over the ancient capital and sunrise on Wakakusa.
Step out the front door and you're in Nara Park, with free-roaming deer at your feet. Nigatsu-do (Todaiji) is a 6-minute walk. The hotel provides a guide to local festivals and temple routes, including the 1,300-year-old Omizutori torch festival in March.
The annual burning of Mt. Wakakusa in late January — the same fire ritual that inspires the entire culinary concept of the villa. Guests get a front-row seat from the property. The hotel has arranged early check-ins for guests attending the festival when roads are closed.
