Villa Flor
Art Nouveau meets mid-century eclectic. Think peacock turquoise walls, tartan curtains, Francesca Gabbiani birch wallpaper, cast-iron stoves, and frescos. Equal parts artist residency and intimate mountain guesthouse.
Arrive by train — S-chanf station is a 5-minute walk and the UNESCO World Heritage Albula Valley route from Chur is stunning.
Why It Matters
The owner is a former gallerist who has cultivated a genuine artist-in-residence culture. Renowned figures including Julian Schnabel, Philipp Keel, and Nathalie Du Pasquier have stayed here and shown work on the walls. The original 1904 Art Nouveau frescoes were professionally restored in the 2009 renovation — a rarity in the Engadin. It sits at the literal finish line of the legendary Engadin Ski Marathon and within walking distance of the Swiss National Park.
Villa Flor is a 1904 Art Nouveau manor house turned seven-room boutique guesthouse on the edge of the Swiss National Park in S-chanf, Upper Engadin. Owner Ladina Florineth is a former gallerist, and every corner of the house reflects it — original spiral staircase, hand-painted frescoes, rotating art exhibitions, and rooms stacked with family heirlooms, flea-market finds, and pieces left behind by artist guests like Julian Schnabel. No spa, no pool, no formal restaurant. Just one of the most atmospherically charged small hotels in the Alps.

Ladina and her team draw on deep local knowledge to arrange excursions, activities, and experiences throughout the Engadin — from art gallery visits (including Hauser & Wirth in St. Moritz) to hiking guides and restaurant recommendations in nearby Zuoz.
The house is available for creative workshops, inspiring retreats, and small team gatherings. The historic rooms and Engadin landscape create a focused yet relaxed backdrop for group work or artistic projects.
The Engadin valley offers nearly 230 km of cross-country trails. The finish of the legendary Engadin Ski Marathon (42 km, Maloja to S-chanf) is a short walk from the hotel. Ski equipment hire available at the property.
The oldest golf club in Switzerland, founded in 1893, has a course in Samedan and another in Zuoz-Madulain less than 10 minutes from Villa Flor. The 18-hole Zuoz course sits at 1,715m with rapidly changing alpine weather.
The Engadin offers varied mountain bike routes for all levels. Bike rental can be arranged by the host.
Villa Flor regularly hosts art exhibitions in its corridors and public spaces. Past shows have featured Julian Schnabel, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Philipp Keel, David Shrigley, Ernst Scheidegger, and François Halard. The summer 2025 exhibition was Architects Drawings. Exhibitions change each season.
The Swiss National Park — the oldest in the Alps and the largest wildlife area in Switzerland — is a short walk from Villa Flor. Owner Ladina is happy to advise on routes, provide maps, and arrange bag lunches. Over 170 km2 of protected wilderness with ibex, chamois, red deer, and golden eagles.
