Volkshotel
Creative community hub meets accessible urban hotel. Industrial-cool interiors with magnified newspaper cut-outs, concrete, steel, and glass. Deliberately inclusive, intentionally unpretentious. Loud and alive on Friday and Saturday nights, calm enough on weekday mornings for freelancers with laptops.

Why It Matters
Born from a genuine adaptive reuse story — the Volkskrant newspaper building repurposed by Urban Resort Foundation into a creative workspace before becoming a full hotel. Designers Steven Steenbruggen (architecture) and Müller van Tol (interior) kept the 1960s bones intact. Nine of the rooms are one-off artist-designed spaces. The rooftop Badplaats spa is free for hotel guests. Canvas on the 7th floor doubles as a dance venue on weekends. Entry to both is free on Friday and Saturday nights.
The former headquarters of Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant — nicknamed 'The White Swan' for its open-design 1960s concrete exterior — Volkshotel is one of Amsterdam's most genuinely creative places to sleep. It's 196 rooms spread across a building that also houses a rooftop restaurant, a basement sound bar, a sauna and hot tub terrace, co-working spaces, and 85 creative studios for working artists. This is not a boutique hotel in the usual sense. It's more like a neighbourhood that happens to have beds in it.
