Why It Matters
Born from a genuine adaptive reuse story — the Volkskrant newspaper building repurposed by Urban Resort Foundation into a creative workspace before becoming a full hotel. Designers Steven Steenbruggen (architecture) and Müller van Tol (interior) kept the 1960s bones intact. Nine of the rooms are one-off artist-designed spaces. The rooftop Badplaats spa is free for hotel guests. Canvas on the 7th floor doubles as a dance venue on weekends. Entry to both is free on Friday and Saturday nights.
The former headquarters of Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant — nicknamed 'The White Swan' for its open-design 1960s concrete exterior — Volkshotel is one of Amsterdam's most genuinely creative places to sleep. It's 196 rooms spread across a building that also houses a rooftop restaurant, a basement sound bar, a sauna and hot tub terrace, co-working spaces, and 85 creative studios for working artists. This is not a boutique hotel in the usual sense. It's more like a neighbourhood that happens to have beds in it.

A compact enclosed sleeping pod with a double bed and small changing area. The bathroom and toilet are shared between six cabin rooms. The most stripped-back option at Volkshotel — nothing extra, nothing wasted. Not suited for babies or pets.

Bordeaux red velvet, satin, a four-poster bath, and a private cinema setup. Designed by Maja Markovic. You can watch films from anywhere in the room — the beamer projects wherever you point it. Tablet included.
DoubleL
Roomy at 25–29m² and sleeps four. One of the beds hangs from the ceiling — a deliberate design feature rather than a structural quirk. Good for families or small groups who want shared space without a full suite price.

Furnished with objects recovered from the streets of Amsterdam. Materials from discarded items have been repurposed throughout the room — from furniture to fixtures. Designed by François Duquesnoy. Comes with a bathtub and projector.

The middle-ground option. 18m² with a double bed, en-suite shower and toilet, TV, and safe. Comfortable for two without being cramped. The 'room for travellers who like it in the middle.'

The name says most of it. A bed suspended from the ceiling, a raised bath platform for one or two, and a deliberately sensual atmosphere. Designed by Rosa Lisa Winkel. Rooms like this don't exist anywhere else in Amsterdam.

City skyline views and kaleidoscopic motifs inspired by Eastern temples. Designed by Arno Hoogland. Has a bathtub and projector. One of the more dramatic rooms in the building.

A love letter to Dutch cycling culture. Bike components are used throughout the room's design, and you actually sleep in a large bakfiets (Dutch cargo bike cart). Two white bicycles are included to use for cycling around Amsterdam. Designed by Thijs van Oostveen.

At 45m² this is Volkshotel's biggest standard room. Two double beds, two bathrooms (one shower, one bathtub), and one of the beds is tucked into a traditional Dutch 'bedstee' — a built-in cupboard bed. Sleeps four, genuinely spacious.

At 12m², this is genuinely small — but it does come with a private en-suite shower and toilet, TV, double bed, and safe. There's occasionally a structural pillar in the middle of the room. The hotel is upfront about it. Great value if you're mostly out exploring.

Every Friday and Saturday evening, Canvas restaurant on the 7th floor transforms into a dance floor. Resident DJs and guest talent play the night. Free entry for everyone — hotel guests and public alike.
Free open co-working desks in Werkplaats on the ground floor, open daily 07:30–00:00. Private work cabins for 4–8 people can be booked at €45 or €65 per hour.
Underground basement sound bar with ticketed events most nights Thursday through Sunday. National and international DJs, live performances, and cultural events. Ticket prices typically €9–€30 depending on event. Limited capacity.

Every Friday from 15:00–21:00 at Werkplaats, resident hairdresser Judith cuts hair. Pair it with a beer and a burger — one of the more Amsterdam-specific hotel amenities.
Free live jazz sessions every Thursday evening at Werkplaats in the ground-floor lobby. No ticket required — show up, grab a drink, and unwind.
