Astoria Amsterdam
Historic Dutch grandeur meets quiet modern luxury. No glitzy atrium, no skybar gimmicks — just beautifully proportioned rooms, a private garden, and staff who actually remember your name.
Pool access requires booking a 90-minute spa treatment — build that into your planning
Why It Matters
One of very few luxury hotels in the world housed inside genuine 17th-century canal palaces on a UNESCO World Heritage-listed stretch of canal. The hotel held a two-Michelin-starred restaurant (Spectrum) for over a decade — though that restaurant closed in May 2026, with a new fine dining concept in development. The Guerlain Spa partnership and a private courtyard garden shared across all six buildings are both rare amenities for a city-center property.
Six adjoined 17th- and 18th-century canal palaces on Amsterdam's Herengracht — the so-called Gentleman's Canal — converted into a 93-room luxury hotel. The buildings feel like they belong here; that's because they've stood on this street since the Dutch Golden Age, when the city was the mercantile capital of the world. Each palace has a distinct facade, original architectural details, and its own history. Inside, the tone is restrained elegance: cream and gold palettes, antique furniture with contemporary touches, and period details like a monumental staircase and decorative painted ceilings that have been meticulously preserved rather than plastered over.
