Waikiki
Design-forward tropical modernism — Brutalist bones, riot of color and pattern, local art everywhere, and a pool scene that actually has a pulse.
The mandatory $37+tax destination fee actually covers a lot — claim your GoPro, beach chairs, and welcome cocktail at Lost + Found on arrival day
Why It Matters
The first hotel in Waikiki in decades to have a genuine design identity. Michelin-listed. The Vanguard Theory's interiors celebrate Hawaii's multicultural fabric without resorting to tiki-bar clichés. Redfish by Foodland brings serious local food credibility. The resort fee is unusually well-loaded: GoPros, boogie boards, beach chairs, Bishop Museum access, and a welcome cocktail.
Wayfinder Waikiki is the second property from Dovetail + Co (the team behind Wayfinder Newport, RI), and it landed in Honolulu with a clear point of view. Set on the Ala Wai Canal side of Waikiki in a midcentury quasi-Brutalist building, the hotel is a 4-5 minute walk from the beach but feels worlds away from the beige resort conveyor belt that fills the rest of the strip. Honolulu-based design studio The Vanguard Theory handled the interiors, weaving together native Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Filipino, and European references into something warm, eclectic, and genuinely cliché-free. The 70-foot saltwater pool, a Friday-night pool party exclusive to guests, and a strong food-and-drink lineup anchored by Redfish Poke Bar by Foodland give this place real daily energy.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Beach chairs, boogie boards, and GoPro cameras available daily at the front desk as part of the destination fee. Beach towels also provided. The GoPro rental alone makes the $37 fee feel reasonable.
Access to the Bishop Museum — Hawaii's premier natural and cultural history museum — is included in the destination fee. One of the better perks in the fee package.
Off-property experience connecting guests with the Hōkūleʻa and Hawaiʻiloa voyaging canoes — a restoration and learning program that digs into Hawaiian navigation and canoe-building traditions. Meaningful cultural programming beyond the pool.
Off-property agricultural and cultural farm experience connecting guests with traditional Hawaiian land stewardship and farming practices.
On-property hula class. Part of the hotel's programming to connect guests with Hawaiian culture. Included in destination fee — check the monthly happenings calendar for schedule.
On-property lei making workshop. Hands-on and genuinely fun, not just decorative.
On-property ukulele instruction. Part of the hotel's ongoing cultural programming calendar.
Rent a MOKE (small open-air electric vehicle) to explore Waikiki and surrounding neighborhoods. Fun, easy, and distinctly more interesting than a rideshare. Check availability at the front desk.
Local Hawaiian and reggae live music sets by the saltwater pool every Wednesday evening. Included in the destination fee.
Friday evening pool party exclusive to hotel guests. DJ or live music poolside at the 70-foot saltwater pool. Included with the destination fee. The fact it's guests-only keeps it from feeling like a public event.
