West End Inn
Historic New England B&B — warm, unhurried, genuinely hosted. Think original 12-foot ceilings with anthemia medallions, fireplaces in select rooms, and an innkeeper who knows every good restaurant in town. No elevator, no pool, no corporate anonymity.
Breakfast is served at the Neal Street property (49 Neal St), one block from Pine Street — plan a short morning walk
Why It Matters
Built in 1871 and designed by John Calvin Stevens — an architect who shaped over 1,000 Maine buildings — it sits inside the Western Promenade Historic District (on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982). Two blocks from Olmsted-designed promenade walkways. The property recently expanded into a two-inn collection with the reopening of the neighboring Pomegranate Inn on Neal Street (now The West End Collection on Neal) after a full renovation in 2026.
A stately 1871 red-brick townhouse on a quiet residential street in Portland's Western Promenade Historic District, the West End Inn is now the Pine Street anchor of The West End Collection — two historic properties run one block apart. Designed by prolific Maine architect John Calvin Stevens and converted from a private residence to a B&B in 1984, it has 6 individually decorated rooms across three floors, each with a private bath. The vibe is classic but not fussy: antique architectural bones, modern comforts, genuinely hosted stays, and a cooked-to-order breakfast that guests consistently rave about.
