White Water
1970s Scandinavian modernism meets California coastal bohemian. Think warm woods, custom tile work, vintage textiles, and a black-painted exterior that looks stark from the road but surprisingly cozy inside. Not loud, not fussy — deliberately calm.
The $17/night service fee is included in displayed rates and covers Wi-Fi, parking, bikes, and the morning basket — not a surprise add-on
Why It Matters
One of the few genuinely design-forward hotels on the Central Coast, built from scratch on a motel bones. Nina Freudenberger's interiors have landed it in Vogue, Architectural Digest, Condé Nast Traveler, Forbes, Monocle, and the Financial Times. The morning breakfast basket — pastries, juice, Champagne, and HoneyCo. coffee delivered to your door at 7:30am — is a legitimately beloved touch.
White Water is a 25-room boutique lodge sitting directly across from Moonstone Beach on Cambria's Highway 1. Designer Nina Freudenberger gutted a 1988 roadside motel — combined with the neighboring 9Iron property — and reopened it in 2020 with a sharp Scandinavian-meets-California-bohemian aesthetic. Custom furnishings by Haus Interior, art sourced from local craftspeople, Aesop bath products, and Erewhon minibar snacks make it feel genuinely considered rather than hotel-catalog generic.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel's fleet of Linus bikes is complimentary (covered by the $17 daily service fee). Ride down Moonstone Beach Drive into downtown Cambria for restaurants, shops, and galleries.
Hearst Castle is about 10 minutes' drive north of the hotel on Highway 1. Tours of the historic estate are bookable separately.
The Moonstone Beach Boardwalk runs right in front of the hotel. Classic Central Coast strolling territory — dramatic rocky shoreline, tidepools, sea otters, and occasional elephant seals. The beach itself is better for walking than swimming (cold water, rough surf).
Paso Robles is roughly 45 minutes east of Cambria with close to 250 wineries, ranging from large well-known producers to small boutique makers. The hotel's Explore page includes curated local recommendations.
