Whitepod
Alpine eco-glamping with serious design chops. Think Scandi-minimalist meets Swiss mountain refuge. Lots of wood, wool, and fur, with unexpected touches like Japanese furo baths and indoor hammocks. Not flashy, but quietly considered.
Reload the pellet stove before you sleep — it's not automatic, and pods can get cold in the early hours if you forget
Why It Matters
Founded in 2004 by Sofia de Meyer, Whitepod won the World Prize for Sustainable Tourism in 2005 and earned Swisstainable Level 3 certification — the top tier. It was one of the first glamping properties in Europe to prove that sustainability and high-end hospitality aren't mutually exclusive. The geodesic pod design (7m diameter, 4.3m ceiling height) is both an architectural statement and a genuine energy-efficiency solution — domes require ~30% less energy to heat than conventional rooms.
Whitepod Original is an eco-glamping resort perched at 1,400m in the Swiss Alps above Monthey, at the foot of the Dents-du-Midi. Guests sleep in white geodesic dome pods — technically high-tech, energy-efficient bubbles that sit on raised wooden platforms — with sweeping views over the Rhône Valley and Lake Geneva. The whole operation is built around a low-impact philosophy: wood pellet heating, spring water supply, local food sourcing, and a strict no-motorized-transport-within-the-estate rule (meaning you walk 15 minutes from reception to your pod).
