Why It Matters
Voted Sunday Times and GQ Hotel of the Year. The Hives and Treehouses — built in collaboration with eco-treehouse specialists Blue Forest from reclaimed wood — are genuinely special. Add in an on-site apiary pollinating a two-mile radius, a kitchen garden feeding the restaurant, a glass-and-living-roof Garden Room designed by Tate Harmer, and interiors by Isabella Worsley (formerly of the Kit Kemp group), and this is a hotel with genuine design and environmental ambition.
A Victorian Gothic country house from 1850, sitting on 35 acres of gardens, wild meadows, and ancient woodland at the southern tip of the Peak District. Renovated from 2019 by owners Ed and Charles, it's now one of England's more interesting countryside hotels — 15 individually designed rooms in the main house, plus 11 one-bedroom woodland Hives and 2 two-bedroom Treehouses built from reclaimed wood scattered through the trees. The whole place has a distinctly unstuffy feel: guests tramp through the tiled hallways in walking boots, staff chat freely, and the glass-walled Garden Room restaurant runs firmly on local produce.

How you'll actually spend your days.
On-site apiary with working beehives pollinating a two-mile radius. The honey feeds the kitchen (honey face masks, honeycomb in rooms) and the orchards. Part of the Wildhive sustainability ethos.
The hotel's own kitchen garden supplies vegetables and herbs to the restaurant. Guests are welcome to wander through and scrump from the orchards.
Free-to-hire Dutch, trail, and children's bikes available at the Coach House. Pre-booking essential at time of room reservation. The famous Tissington Trail — a 13-mile gentle pedal past Tissington Hall Estate to Parsley Hay dark-sky reserve — starts nearby.
Electric and mountain bikes available for a fee. Curated eBike tours via partner PeakePedals on high-spec bikes with GPS maps.
Croquet available on the hotel lawns.
Guided forest-bathing sessions led by yoga and wellness practitioner Gavin — a slower, meditative way to connect with the woodland environment.
Dedicated map room in the Coach House stocked with local walking and cycling routes, including trails around Dovedale, the Limestone Way, and the Boundary Walk. Staff will highlight pub stops en route. The Komoot App is also recommended.
The hotel can arrange priority access to Ashbourne Golf Club for guests.
A rotating programme of events including Japanese Raku pottery with ceramic expert Andy Mason, floristry workshops, wildlife sculpting, candle making, mixology classes, grill nights, forest camping, and Pol Roger dinners. Check the events calendar for current listings.
The hotel can arrange tours of the White Peak Distillery, where Wire Works single-malt whiskies and Shining Cliff gin are made. Tour ends in the tasting room.
Alfresco dining experiences in the woodland and grounds — fairy-lit woodland suppers, Wild BBQs, and Wild Picnics. Available seasonally; book through the hotel.
Self-guided trails through 35 acres of ancient woodland, wildflower meadows, and gardens. Home to deer, badgers, rabbits, and many bird species. Picnicking by Bentley Brook is a popular option.
