Woods At Sasan
Eco-conscious, biophilic luxury. Raw stone, reclaimed teak, hand-dyed khadi linen, macramé wall-hangings by local artisans. The design is modern and restrained — floor-to-ceiling glass that lets the orchard in, not out. More artist residency than wildlife lodge.
Book the Pavilion over the Studio — the two-tiered layout, rain shower, and extra space make it worth the premium
Why It Matters
EarthCheck Platinum certified and recognised by Regenerative Travel as India's first Regenerative Hotel. Featured in Condé Nast Traveller's Top 25 Resorts in India. No trees were cut during construction. Over 40% of staff are from neighbouring villages. The parent company, 1000 Island Hotels, runs the resort on a 'Destination First' philosophy that shapes everything from the architecture to the menu.
Woods at Sasan sits on 16 acres of mango orchard and forest at the edge of Gir National Park — the last place on earth where Asiatic lions still roam wild. The 38-room resort was built without felling a single tree, using reclaimed wood from the Alang shipyard and local stone walls in the traditional Todi style. It's a serious biophilic retreat where architecture, ecology, and wellness programming come together in a way that feels thought-through rather than trend-chasing.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A guided sunrise trail through the forest followed by a hilltop breakfast under the open sky — the 'bonnet' is the vehicle hood used as a serving table. Conducted by the head naturalist. One of the most praised experiences at the property.
An evening excursion to the riverside — botanical blends and drinks served as the sun drops below the tree line. A chauffeured vintage car ride to the Hiran riverbank is offered as part of premium versions of the experience.
An escorted safari to the enclosed Devaliya Safari Park — a smaller, more predictable alternative to the main Gir National Park safari. Good option if the main park permits are full or for a guaranteed lion encounter.
Private escorted safari in an open gypsy jeep to Gir National Park with the resort's resident naturalist. Gir is the sole remaining habitat of the Asiatic lion — around 600 individuals. The naturalist reads pug marks, tracks animal calls, and positions the vehicle for best sightings. Safari permits are required and available from the Gujarat government website — book well in advance during peak season.
Sasan Gir is considered one of India's premier birding destinations. The resort's naturalists lead early morning birding expeditions through the forest and orchard.
Guided moon gazing through the resort's telescope, and forest night drives using night-vision optics — a chance to hear and see the forest after dark.
Guided tour of the resort's organic kitchen garden and farm with the chief horticulturist. Ayurvedic herb plantation tours are also available as part of the SOM wellness programme.
Guided day trips to the Somnath Temple (38 km) and the ancient city of Junagadh, including the Mahabat Maqbara mausoleum and Uparkot Fort, arranged by the resort's concierge.
Bicycle hire available for guests to explore the resort grounds and surrounding forest trails at their own pace.
A wood-fired or coal-fire meal prepared and served in a clearing in the jungle. Part of the curated out-of-resort experience offerings. Also available as a 'Bonnet BBQ' at the resort itself under the open sky.
A signature experience at Woods at Sasan: a fully plated sattvic meal eaten in complete silence. Preceded by a sound healing session with the resident wellness expert. More meditative than gimmicky — guests consistently mention it as a standout.
Hands-on pottery sessions with Nathabhai, a master potter from the surrounding community. Repeatedly singled out in guest reviews — particularly well-suited for families and those interested in the region's craft traditions.
