Ydor Hotel & Spa
Contemporary Cycladic luxury with a mythological narrative running through the design. Whitewashed stone walls, marble bathrooms, golden hand-painted birds in every room (a nod to the island's legend of beauty restored), and oak furnishings inspired by Kea's Royal Oak forest. Intimate scale — 24 rooms — keeps the atmosphere calm rather than resort-busy.
Ask about the porter service from the port before arrival — saves the taxi guessing game after a 70-minute ferry.
Why It Matters
One of only two 5-star hotels on Kea island. Mizu is the only Japanese fusion restaurant on the island. Nine of 24 rooms have private pools. The Cyrene Spa has an indoor heated pool with direct sea views and uses treatments built around Greek botanical brand Ariadne Athens, including a signature face mask made with acorn flour from Kea's own Royal Oak forest.
'Ydor' is the ancient Greek word for water, and Kea historically ran with fresh springs — which explains everything from the hotel's name to the pool-as-mythology design philosophy. This 24-room adults-oriented boutique sits on a hillside at the edge of Vourkari village, looking directly out over St. Nicholas Bay and the Aegean. Nine of those 24 rooms come with their own private plunge pools. Kea is roughly one hour by ferry from Athens, considerably quieter than Mykonos or Santorini, and Ydor makes a strong argument for keeping it that way.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Kea has 12 walking trail routes spanning 81km of stone-paved paths. Routes connect ancient theatres, oak forests, and hilltop villages. Hotel concierge assists with route planning.
An approximately hour-long walk to the Agios Nikolaos Lighthouse at the edge of the bay. Passes the prehistoric settlement of Aghia Irini. The hotel recommends stopping in Vourkari village on the way back for cocktails. Visible from the hotel balconies.
Speedboat tours around the island, stopping at hidden coves and ancient ruins. The hotel concierge arranges bookings. Can extend to island-hopping to Kythnos and the famous double-sided Kolona beach.
Kea Divers, a PADI 5-Star dive center, is located next to the hotel and offers courses for beginners and technical dives for certified divers. The island has a famous underwater heritage site including three historic wrecks — Britannic, Burdigala, and Patris — in depths of 28–40m. The 19th-century paddle-wheel steamer Patris is one of the best recreational wreck dives in the Mediterranean.
Canoeing, wakeboarding, water skiing, and paddleboarding at Koundouraki Bay, about 35 minutes' drive from the hotel. Operated by KW Sports.
Half-day and full-day cooking classes run by local foodies (via partner Kea Artisanal). Concierge arranges bookings.
Visit a local thyme honey producer. Kea's signature thyme honey is used throughout the island's cuisine — the hotel can arrange visits to a local producer.
The hotel hosts small, intimate wedding ceremonies and receptions overlooking the Aegean. The team handles event planning. Contact via +30 22880 22044 or info@ydorhotel.com.
Signature cocktail-and-sushi sunset session at the Mizu terrace bar. Japanese-inspired cocktails paired with sushi while watching the Aegean sunset. The hotel bills this as the best sunset viewpoint on the island.
