Zaborin
Modernist Zen ryokan. Spare interiors, deep natural materials, extraordinary silence. This is a place to do almost nothing, and do it very well.

Why It Matters
Awarded Two Michelin Keys. One of the most architecturally distinctive ryokans in Japan, designed by Makoto Nakayama. Private onsen in every villa, sourced from Zaborin's own volcanic spring and rated top 10% nationally for quality. The signature kita kaiseki — a northern riff on Kyoto kaiseki using Hokkaido produce, game, and foraged ingredients — is a serious culinary draw in its own right.
Zaborin is a 15-villa luxury ryokan sitting in a Hanazono birchwood grove with unobstructed views of Mount Yotei and the surrounding Hokkaido forest. The name itself is a Zen concept — 'zabo' means 'to sit and forget,' and 'rin' means 'a small wood.' Architect Makoto Nakayama and Creative Director Shouya Grigg turned that philosophy into a building: angular, minimal, and deliberately quiet, designed to pull nature inside rather than shut it out. Every villa has two private onsen fed by volcanic spring water drawn from nearly a kilometre underground — rated among the top 10% in Japan for water quality — and the nightly kita kaiseki dinner from Hokkaido-born chef Yoshihiro Seno is reason enough to book.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The cool Hokkaido summer climate is ideal for cycling. The Niseko Hill Climb (16km road climb) and Niseko Classic (140km international event) both take place near the property.
Several world-class golf courses are located nearby with views of Mount Yotei and the Annupuri range. The Niseko Classic (a 140km UCI-sanctioned cycling event) and Niseko Hill Climb also run past or near the property in summer.
A complimentary public footbath set in Zaborin's central courtyard. Easy to miss — look for the wooden lid between the triangular corridors. In heavy snowfall months, the staff carve candle-lit tunnels through the snow drifts to reach it.
Two private hot spring baths per villa — one indoor, one open-air rotenburo. The free-flowing volcanic spring water (gensen kakenagashi) arrives at natural temperature from nearly 1km underground. Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) is a natural accompaniment, inhaling pine and birch from the surrounding woods while soaking.
Hokkaido's autumn leaf season is one of Japan's shortest and most spectacular. Zaborin sits within its own birchwood that turns burnished gold and red — no day trip required. Trekking routes of varying difficulty are nearby, including the Shinsennuma swamp boardwalk and Annupuri ridge trails.
A curated collection of Japanese poetry, world literature, architecture books, mountaineering stories, and Hokkaido flora and fauna guides — available in multiple languages. Films for adults and children, plus board games, available to borrow back to the villa.
Informal tea room open to guests throughout the day. A relaxed demystification of the Japanese tea ceremony — sit, watch, and participate in brewing a bowl of matcha without the formality.
Spring snowmelt brings the rapids to their highest and fastest. Rafting is available from April in the surrounding Hokkaido rivers.
The Niseko resort — encompassing Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri, with nearly 50km of ski runs and an all-mountain pass — is minutes from the property. Zaborin is 4.2km from the Niseko Grand Hirafu ski area. Famous for its light Siberian 'champagne powder' snow. Skiing available from December through May.
