Stay Smart About Pickpockets
Barcelona is generally safe, but pickpocketing is common around La Rambla, the Gothic Quarter, metro lines 1 and 3, and Barceloneta late at night. Use a zipped crossbody bag kept in front, keep your phone away between map checks, and be wary of distractions like spills or sudden ‘helpful’ strangers near metro doors.
Honor the Local Schedule
Plan lunch around 2 PM and dinner from 9 PM onward; many independent shops close between 2–5 PM, so do your shopping late morning or early evening instead. Bars fill closer to midnight, and clubs are quiet before 2 AM, so pace your evenings accordingly.
Respect Catalan Identity
Catalonia has its own language and culture; Catalan is not a dialect of Spanish. Learn a couple of phrases like “bon dia” (good day) and “gràcies” (thank you), avoid debating independence unless invited, and remember that many signs and menus will be in Catalan as well as Spanish.
