Using Buses & Uber
R1 and R2 buses cover the Hotel Zone and downtown for a low flat fare; pay the driver in pesos and keep small bills. For longer or late‑night hops, use Uber for transparent pricing and safer pickups than street taxis.
Beach Safety & Flags
Always check the colored flag at beach entrances: green is calm, yellow indicates stronger waves, red means very strong currents, and black prohibits swimming. Obey lifeguard instructions and avoid swimming after drinking.
Money & Payments
Carry a mix of cash and cards. Many Hotel Zone businesses accept cards and US dollars, but downtown markets, taco stands, and buses expect pesos. ATMs inside banks or malls are generally safer than isolated ones.
Restaurant Etiquette
Servers will not bring the bill until you ask; say “la cuenta, por favor” when ready. A 10–15% tip is standard if service is not already included; leave it in cash if possible.
Water & Food Precautions
In the Hotel Zone, resort tap water is often filtered, but elsewhere choose bottled or filtered water. Enjoy street food at busy stalls that turn over ingredients quickly, and skip ice at very basic stands.
Timeshare & Street Promoters
Near the Hotel Zone you may be approached with offers of free tours, breakfasts, or gifts in exchange for a “short presentation.” These are timeshare pitches; a firm, polite “no, gracias” and walking away is enough.
Packing for Sun & Comfort
Bring a wide‑brimmed hat, reef‑safe sunscreen, light long sleeves, and comfortable walking sandals or sneakers. Air‑conditioning can be strong in malls and buses, so a light extra layer is useful.
Safety & Nighttime Areas
Tourist zones like the Hotel Zone, Puerto Cancún, and central downtown around Parque de las Palapas are generally well‑patrolled. Still, stick to lit main streets at night, avoid obvious intoxication, and use Uber instead of walking long distances after dark.
