One Perfect Day in Kraków’s Royal Old Town
Royal castles, market halls, and pierogi in one walkable day
Planning a trip to Kraków?
Spend a full day inside Kraków’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, blending royal history, Gothic architecture, and lively markets with hearty Polish comfort food. This plan keeps everything walkable and affordable while leaving space to wander, people‑watch, and enjoy the city’s romantic atmosphere.
Highlights
Explore the former seat of Polish kings with Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral overlooking the Vistula River.[2][3]
Stroll Rynek Główny, Europe’s largest medieval square, ringed with historic townhouses, cafes, and churches.[2][3][6]
Browse souvenirs and handicrafts inside Sukiennice, a Renaissance-era covered market still trading today.[3][7]
Admire St. Mary’s Basilica’s brick façade and rich interior, and listen for the hourly bugle call from its tower.[2][3][4][7]
Descend beneath the main square into a high-tech museum tracing Kraków’s medieval trading history.[2][3][6]
Walk the leafy park encircling the Old Town where the city walls once stood, a quiet contrast to the busy square.[6][7]
Good to Know
Trams, tickets, and walking strategy
For this Old Town-focused day you likely will not need trams, but if you do ride, buy a 20- or 60-minute ticket from machines at stops or via the Jakdojade app and validate it immediately on board; inspectors check often and fines are around 150 PLN for unvalidated tickets. The Old Town, Wawel Hill, and Planty park form a compact loop—plan to walk between all sights to save money and soak up the street life.
Cash, cards, and small scams
Cards are widely accepted, but having some PLN cash is handy for market stalls and small purchases around Rynek Główny. Avoid unlicensed taxis near the station and the ‘free gift’ flower/bracelet scam in the main square—if someone presses something into your hand and then demands money, firmly decline and walk away.
