Use the Metro Smartly
Lisbon’s metro runs roughly 6:30am–1am and is the easiest way to cover longer distances. Buy a Navegante card and consider a 24-hour pass on your busiest sightseeing days for unlimited rides.
Tram 28 Safety
Tram 28 is famous but very crowded and known for pickpockets, especially near major tourist stops. If you ride it, wear your bag on your front and keep phones in zipped pockets, or simply walk its route through Alfama instead.
Couvert Etiquette
Bread, olives, and other snacks placed on your table are called couvert and are not free. If you don’t want them, politely say "Não, obrigado" and they will be removed without awkwardness.
Ask for the Bill
In Portugal, servers do not bring the bill unless asked. When you’re ready to leave, say "A conta, por favor" and wait; this is normal and not considered rude.
Meal Times & Kitchen Breaks
Plan lunch between about 12:30–3pm and dinner from 8pm onward. Many kitchens close between 3pm and 7pm, so don’t expect a hot meal in that window.
Greeting Norms
Say "Bom dia" (good day) or "Boa tarde" (good afternoon) when entering small shops and cafés. Simple greetings make interactions warmer and more relaxed.
Language Sensitivity
Portuguese and Spanish are different; avoid speaking Spanish or calling Portuguese "Spanish." Use English or a few Portuguese phrases like "Obrigado" instead.
Tipping & Service Charges
Check if there’s a "serviço" line on your bill; if service is already included, no tip is expected. If not, rounding up or leaving 5–10% is appreciated but not obligatory.
