Staying Safe from Pickpockets
Use cross-body bags that zip fully, keep wallets and phones in front pockets or hidden pouches, and stay especially alert on crowded buses (like the 64), the metro around Termini and the Spanish Steps, and in tight crowds at major sights.
Timing Your Coffee and Meals
Order cappuccino only in the morning and switch to espresso or macchiato after lunch, plan lunch around 1:00–1:30 PM, and don’t expect many good local spots to serve dinner before 8:00–8:30 PM.
Dress Codes for Churches
Carry a light scarf or shawl and avoid shorts or skirts above the knee when you plan to visit major churches, especially the Vatican; staff can and do turn people away for bare shoulders or knees.
Using Public Transport Wisely
Rely on metro lines A and B for longer hops (Colosseo, Termini, Vatican), use buses for the historic center where there is no metro, and always validate tickets when you board buses or enter metro stations.
Restaurant Bills, Coperto, and Tipping
Expect a small coperto (cover charge) listed on the menu, don’t feel obliged to tip more than rounding up or leaving €1–2 if service was good, and be wary of places that add a large percentage service charge in touristy squares.
