Ancient Nabatean tombs carved into dramatic desert landscapes

Al Ula sits in Saudi Arabia's northwest like something from another planet. Here, 2,000-year-old Nabatean tombs emerge from red sandstone cliffs that tower over date palm oases. The same people who built Petra left their mark here, carving elaborate facades into rock faces that glow amber at sunset. But this isn't just about ancient history. Al Ula has transformed into Saudi Arabia's most ambitious cultural project, with luxury desert camps, world-class restaurants, and art installations scattered across 22,000 square kilometers of dramatic landscape. The silence is profound. The stars are brilliant. And you'll likely have these ancient wonders mostly to yourself.

Al Ula stretches across Saudi Arabia's Medina Province, roughly 300 kilometers north of Medina city. The region centers around the ancient oasis town of Al Ula, but the real draws are scattered across the surrounding desert. Hegra, also called Mada'in Salih, contains the most spectacular Nabatean tombs outside of Jordan's Petra. These 111 monumental tombs date from the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE. The landscape shifts constantly here. Red sandstone formations called 'jebels' rise from flat desert floors. Narrow canyons wind between towering cliffs. Date palm groves cluster around natural springs. The whole region sits along the ancient incense trade route that connected Arabia to the Mediterranean. Today's Al Ula town has about 5,000 residents, but most visitors stay in the resort areas or desert camps outside town.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book Hegra tours online in advance - they're often cheaper than buying at the gate and guarantee your spot
  • 2.Stay in Al Ula town rather than luxury resorts to save 70% on accommodation costs
  • 3.Pack lunch and snacks from town before heading to remote sites - food at tourist areas is expensive
  • 4.Visit during weekdays when possible - weekend rates for tours and hotels increase significantly
  • 5.Rent a car instead of booking private tours if you're staying more than 3 days - you'll break even and gain flexibility

Travel Tips

  • Download offline maps before exploring - cell service is spotty in remote desert areas
  • Bring a good flashlight for exploring tombs and canyons - many sites have poor lighting
  • Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip - the sandstone can be slippery and sharp
  • Start early in the morning - sites are cooler, less crowded, and better for photography
  • Respect photography rules at Hegra - some tombs prohibit photos inside
  • Carry more water than you think you need - the dry desert air is dehydrating
  • Book accommodations well in advance during peak season (December-February)
