Dana Nature Reserve

Jordan's biodiversity hotspot from desert valleys to mountain peaks

Dana Nature Reserve stretches across 320 square kilometers of Jordan's most dramatic terrain, from the sandstone cliffs of Dana village down to the desert valleys of Wadi Araba. This is Jordan's largest biosphere reserve, home to 800 plant species and everything from Nubian ibex to Syrian wolves. But here's what makes Dana special: you can hike from Mediterranean woodland at 1,500 meters elevation down to desert scrubland at sea level, all in a single day. The reserve protects four different bio-geographical zones, making it the country's most biodiverse destination. And unlike Wadi Rum's tourist crowds, Dana still feels genuinely wild.

We're working on adding amazing itineraries for Dana Nature Reserve. In the meantime, try the app to create your own!

The Rummana Mountain Trail offers the gentlest introduction to Dana - a 3-kilometer loop that takes about 2 hours and stays relatively flat through juniper forests. Start early from Rummana campsite to spot wildlife before the heat kicks in. For something more challenging, the Dana to Feynan trail covers 14 kilometers and drops 1,000 meters in elevation. This full-day hike takes you through all four ecosystems, but you'll need to arrange transport from Feynan Ecolodge at the bottom. The Wadi Dana trail splits the difference at 9 kilometers, following the valley floor with moderate elevation changes. Here's the thing about Dana's trails: they're not well-marked like European hiking paths. Bring a GPS device or hire a local guide from Dana village. The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature runs guided walks for 25 JOD per person, and honestly, it's worth it for the wildlife spotting alone.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Buy groceries in Tafilah before heading to Dana - the village shop has limited selection and higher prices
  • 2.Camping at Rummana costs 10 JOD versus 40+ JOD for guesthouse rooms, though you'll need your own gear
  • 3.Guided walks cost 25 JOD but include wildlife spotting expertise you won't get solo hiking
  • 4.Pack lunch from Dana village to avoid expensive meals at Feynan Ecolodge if day hiking
  • 5.Shared taxis from Tafilah to Dana village cost 3 JOD versus 25 JOD for private transport

Travel Tips

  • Start hikes before 7 AM to spot wildlife before they retreat from the heat
  • Download offline maps - cell coverage is spotty throughout the reserve
  • Bring a headlamp for early morning walks and evening stargazing sessions
  • Check weather conditions before attempting the Dana to Feynan trail - flash floods are possible
  • Learn a few Arabic phrases - many local guides speak limited English
  • Carry more water than you think you need - dehydration happens quickly at altitude
  • Book Feynan Ecolodge months in advance, especially for spring and fall visits
