August
Monastic minimalism with warmth. Think clean lines, authentic heritage materials, muted tones, and a genuine hush. No lobby music. No fuss. The bar in the former chapel, with its soaring ceilings and original marble, is easily one of the most arresting rooms in Antwerp. Opened in 2019, it's the second project of hotelier Mouche Van Hool, who also runs Hotel Julien in the city center.

Why It Matters
Architect Vincent Van Duysen's only hotel design to date. The convent conversion preserves extraordinary original details — chapel floor tiles scrubbed piece by piece, a Lourdes Grotto garden, centuries-old eaves intact above some rooms. The restaurant holds a 15/20 Gault & Millau rating. The spa uses Maiwe, a Belgian organic brand built around wild-harvested Andean rosehip oil. And the freshwater swimming pond, filtered by reed beds, is unlike anything else in the city.
August is Vincent Van Duysen's first hotel project, set inside a 19th-century Augustinian convent in Antwerp's pedestrian-only Green Quarter. The 44-room property is calm, monastic, and completely sure of itself. Van Duysen kept the good bones — original floor tiles, stained glass, vaulted chapel ceilings, and centuries-old timber roofs — then layered in sage greens, warm whites, handwoven rugs, and Le Labo toiletries. The result is a hotel that feels earned, not staged.
