Cavallo Point Lodge
National park luxury meets historic preservation. The historic buildings give the property the feel of a genteel Colonial outpost; the contemporary lodging keeps it grounded in modern sustainability. Calm, spacious, and decidedly un-urban — though the city is just a ferry ride away.
Take the free shuttle to the Sausalito Ferry Terminal and ferry across to SF — more enjoyable than driving and parking in the city
Why It Matters
One of the only hotels set inside a National Park in the US — it sits on National Park Service land, meaning the surrounding landscape is untouched. The dual identity of lovingly preserved Army buildings alongside LEED-standard contemporary lodging is genuinely rare. It also holds Beyond Green certification for sustainability, is part of the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program, and is Virtuoso-affiliated.
Cavallo Point sits inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, at the base of the bridge on the former grounds of Fort Baker — a US Army post that dates to the early 1900s. You're in Marin County, not San Francisco proper, but the city skyline and the bridge are right there in your face at all times. Two entirely different accommodation styles exist side by side: impeccably restored Colonial Revival officer's quarters and enlisted men's buildings from the turn of the century, and newer hillside rooms built to high green-architecture standards with private decks, radiant heated floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows. No pool, but the spa has a heated outdoor meditation pool, Zen garden, outdoor Jacuzzis, and fire pits. The cooking school is one of the better things going here — it runs nearly every weekend and is open to the public.
